The problem is that people tend to think pictures are real they just tell the truth. One has to remember photographs are composed, selected. They are no more or less true than any other poetry.
Even without any retouching a photograph might not be any more revealing of actually happened than somebody just writing about the incident.

This was the image that went round the world. Children running from a napalm attack, a very visceral image of children in pain.

This is the same photo uncropped, with an army photographer casually loading his camera. Not quite as visceral is it?

Other photos taken at the same time

Is that soldier directing the children away from the fire, or is he directing them to the photographers. It is not quite the same when the children are not screaming is it?

Gosh what a lot of photographers were just in the right place.

The children are now running away from the group of photographers, we are not seeing the same thing re- staged are we?

Type in Vietnam napalm girl and look at all the pictures there are, what is going on?

Of course we don't know we were not there, did a group of photographers being convoyed round the war by the army see something they should not. and that first picture tells the true story of children being harmed in war. So the Americans later released all the other pictures to make it seem less bad, or was the whole thing staged.

Nobody should believe something just because they have seen a picture, even if it has not been adapted, you need to know other evidence. In the very act of taking a picture the photographer is selecting a view.

Great post and angle to the topic.

jonb, any thoughts on the other photos?

:yup: In fact beyond 3 kinds of shadows of a doubt, besides other sloppy fakery.

Thanks for another perfect example for beginners who are willing to learn more about seeing the reality:

Fun with photo analysis!

I have planned for some time now to do an exposé about Jim Morrison, lead singer of the Doors who faked his death in 1971. We have already found his girlfriend, Pamela Courson here. It turns out she became a late-inning replacement for Barbara Walters.

Jim we have not located. I do know that before his fake death, he was body-doubled. So he was somewhere else when he died. I don’t think he has reappeared. I could be easily surprised. However, I think we can have more fun with this matter if we take another angle.

While at the Miles Mathis conference last summer. I brought up the matter of the photo below:

Those are the three children of Clara and Rear Admiral George Stephen Morrison. They are, left to right, Anne, Jim and Andrew. And Jim is indeed the “Jim Morrison” we knew. Make no mistake about that.

Miles looked at this photo on my IPad and I instantly saw a light go on behind his eyes. It is fake. He took it and passed it around the room for everyone to view, and then after our input, gave his own view of what is wrong with the photo.

I could pass all that along to you, but am not going to. We do a lot of work here with photos, but speaking for myself, my naked-eye work is not anywhere near the caliber of Mathis’s. So I thought this might be fun – just to lay out some photos, and let readers judge whether they are real, of if fake, what is wrong with them.

The photo above is #1. Following below the fold are seven more. All of them exhibit signs of photo monkey business, in my humble opinion. But I am no expert, just a student, so please chime in. And above all, have fun!

I have seen some blatant fakery in my life, but this joke is really beyond every standard.

They really want us to believe that this doll in the casket is nobody less than Benny "I used to be a commie but then I became the founder of fascism" Hill Mussolini??

I know he was a dwarf, but this mannequin is really one the worst ever done.

Nice display of "Italian patriots", faked photo too

They could as well have placed Chucky there and claimed it was Arnold Schwarzenegger...
