Did 4Chan Troll The CIA?

On Tuesday night, BuzzFeed News published an explosive, yet completely unverified, dossier alleging that President-elect Donald Trump engaged in a whole host of, shall we say unusual, sexual activities in Moscow. Matt already wrote about the basics of the report and the blackmail threat, so I'm not going to delve into that.

What's worth talking about, however, are swirling claims on Reddit that 4chan users on the board /pol/ completely made the entire thing up. According to a variety of posts on the pro-Trump subreddit r/The_Donald, a user on /pol/, a 4chan board, made up the most salacious story in the report. He then mailed it to anti-Trump Republican strategist Rick Wilson, who then went to the CIA. The story was then included on the dossier published Tuesday by BuzzFeed News.

If this is true, this effectively means that 4chan trolled the U.S. intelligence system and the majority of the U.S. media with what's basically Donald Trump erotic fanfiction, which is terrifying.

While literally no aspect of anything that was reported tonight by both BuzzFeed News and 4chan has been confirmed or verified, it is an odd coincidence that a 4chan post from prior to the election seems to match up with what was released on Tuesday.

Additionally, WikiLeaks says that the report published by BuzzFeed is "not an intelligence report" and that it is not consistent with the style of other reports.

Wilson denied that his source was from /pol/.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if 4chan pulled off what is possibly the greatest troll game in internet history.

Is nobody on TZ going to comment on how the rise of the Alt-Right seems to have occurred under the watchful eye of the CIA?

What about you, Novum? Does it seem likely to you that 4chan have been trolling the CIA, when said CIA have been running the board for at least 7 years, if the screen grab I provided is credible?

Lets assume the CIA is running that board, does this then also mean they control whoever comes along and posts on it?

Id assume its still a place that allows just about anyone to submit content, regardless of who the sites overlords are or who they collaborate with.

So if someone submitted a post that consisted of fabrications, and then someone else took the bait and ran with it as being factual, you could say that someone got trolled along the way, regardless of which alphabet agency (allegedly) runs the board.

So, do you think they just sat in front of their computer screens letting everything unfold without any interference? I wont profess to knowing the CIA's full IT capabilities, but I'm fairly sure they'd be able to filter out the common garden variety troll from the person who is carefully trying to cover their tracks while carrying out a disinformation campaign against a political party, etc.

Its possible someone took the info and ran with it, hoping to do a sort of wikileaks back onto Trump, in the way it was done to Hillary.

And yes i still think theyd let members of the public post pretty much whatever they want, even if the board was spook controlled. Let it all hang out, but they (spooks) can then investigate anything of interest. Some of those posters would know how to cover their tracks quite well, its not that difficult to do, internet cafes or free wifi and anon devices etc. and thats if you assume good proxies / VPNs can be traced... point is there are options available that do mean you can be anonymous to an extent , even to spooks.

The story in the OP states the info was mailed to an anti-trump strategist, who was perhaps rather desperate by this point and maybe even had pro hillary people in the CIA who were complicit in spreading fake news for political reasons.

Stranger things have happened.

And im sure both sides have their supporters and detractors in alphabet agencies and law enforcement, its just the way it goes, so bias and even emotion occurring either way is not entirely unlikely.
