Biden DOJ Files Appeal To Extradite Julian Assange, Ignoring Rights Groups

The Biden Justice Department on Friday formally appealed a British judge's rejection of the U.S. request to extradite Julian Assange, confirming the new administration's intention to run with its predecessor's espionage charges against the WikiLeaks publisher despite warnings that the case endangers press freedoms around the world.

"Yes, we filed an appeal and we are continuing to pursue extradition," Marc Raimondi, a Justice Department spokesperson, told AFP on Friday, the deadline for the U.S. to appeal Judge Vanessa Baraitser's ruling from last month.

As Common Dreams reported at the time, while Baraitser accepted most of the allegations that the Trump Justice Department leveled against Assange in its 2019 indictment—which charges the WikiLeaks founder with 17 counts of violating the Espionage Act—the judge denied the U.S. extradition request on the grounds that America's brutal prison system would pose a threat to Assange's life.

If extradited to the U.S., Assange could face up to 175 years in a maximum-security prison—conditions under which Assange would likely commit suicide, Baraitser warned in her decision.

"Disappointing that the Biden administration should do this given the chilling effect the ongoing pursuit of Julian Assange will have on press freedom," Stefan Simanowitz, Amnesty International's media manager for Europe, tweeted in response to the Biden administration's appeal.

In anticipation of the DOJ's filing, the Courage Foundation—an organization dedicated to defending whistleblowers—said in a statement Thursday that, if confirmed as Biden's attorney general, Merrick Garland should "take a renewed look at the prosecution" of Assange and "drop the case."

"The Assange case represents the gravest threat to press freedom in a generation," the group said. "It's not about Julian Assange as a person. It's about whether the U.S. government will respect the role journalism plays in democratic life (as a check on powerful institutions)."

The Justice Department's appeal came just days after a coalition of press freedom and human rights organizations including the ACLU, Amnesty International, and PEN America published an open letter urging the Biden administration to drop the case against Assange, whose release of classified documents exposed U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Journalists at major news publications regularly speak with sources, ask for clarification or more documentation, and receive and publish documents the government considers secret," the open letter reads. "In our view, such a precedent in this case could effectively criminalize these common journalistic practices. In addition, some of the charges included in the indictment turn entirely on Mr. Assange's decision to publish classified information."

In a column on Thursday, The Intercept's James Risen similarly warned that "if the Assange prosecution is successful, it will set a dangerous legal standard" and "open the door for the government to prosecute journalists for publishing classified information, even if doing so is in the public interest."

"The Assange case could allow prosecutors to build criminal cases against journalists who obtain government secrets based on their interactions with their sources," Risen wrote. "Investigative reporters throughout the country could face criminal liability simply for meeting with sources and encouraging them to provide information."

"That would make it nearly impossible for reporters to aggressively cover the Pentagon, the CIA, or the National Security Agency," Risen added, "and ultimately imperil the American republic."

This was bound to happen when Trump left office or was forced out by whatever means. There is no excuse for Trump not pardoning Assange when he was in a position to... for four years....(instead of allowing the Justice Dept under his watch to go after Assange). He especially could have pardoned Assange during his last days in office instead of pardoning quite a number of people who did not in any way deserve to be pardoned.

Biden Calls on Congress to Pass Extreme Gun Control Laws

Andrew Anglin February 14, 2021

On down the list, all of our worst nightmares are coming true.

Joe Biden has already:

- Sent the military to occupy the Capitol
- Opened up the borders
- Moved to legalize all of the illegals
- Destroyed however many millions of jobs in the name of global warming
- Taken the coronavirus lockdowns to a whole new realm
- Turned over American sovereignty to the UN in the name of global warming
- Escalated tensions with China and Russia
- Threatened a war against Iran and refused to reinstate the Iran Deal
- Given trannies all kinds of new super powers

Now, of course, he’s coming for your guns.

RT:

President Joe Biden has released a statement allowing a closer look at what his “commonsense” policy on gun laws will be, demanding, among other things, that Congress pass universal background checks and ban “assault weapons.”

“Today, I am calling on Congress to enact commonsense gun law reforms,” Biden said in his Sunday statement. The timing matched the third anniversary of the Parkland shooting, which saw a gunman open fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 and wounding another 17.

Biden has long promised to put his weight behind stricter gun laws if he were elected president and his ideas run down the list of common demands gun-control advocates often push for. The president is calling for universal background checks on all gun sales, banning high-capacity magazines, an “assault weapons” ban, and “eliminating immunity for gun manufacturers who knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.”

“We owe it to all those we’ve lost and to all those left behind to grieve to make a change. The time to act is now,” Biden said.

This is pure shock and awe.

The masses of people are like a deer in the headlights.

I think most people just aren’t even able to process what is happening around them.

A big part of that was the whole coronavirus thing – that transformed people’s lives, took them so far outside of normalcy that they no longer really even know what normalcy is.

How many lazy conservative morons said that the government could take everything from them and they didn’t care as long as they got to keep their guns?

Well, now that everything else has been taken, they no longer have the ability to protect their guns.

Most boomers won’t even know Biden is coming for their guns, because all of the conservative groups are already banned from Facebook.

Boomers said private companies were allowed to take away the First Amendment, so if Joe Biden sends Amazon to take their guns, conservatives will just hand them over because that’s our values and it’s who we are and Jeff Bezos worked hard to build his company so he has a right to take people’s guns.

Joe Biden Bombs Syria

Andrew Anglin February 26, 2021

It only took him a month!

CNN:

The US military on Thursday struck a site in Syria used by two Iranian-backed militia groups in response to rocket attacks on American forces in the region in the past two weeks.

“Up to a handful” of militants were killed in the strikes, a US official told CNN.

The strikes, which mark the US military’s first known action under President Joe Biden, swiftly drew criticism from a Democratic lawmaker. The site was not specifically tied to the rocket attacks but Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said he was “confident” it was used by the same Iranian-backed Shia militias that had fired rockets at US and coalition forces.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the strikes took place “at President Biden’s direction” and were authorized not just to respond to the recent attacks against American and coalition forces but also to deal with “ongoing threats to those personnel.”

“Specifically, the strikes destroyed multiple facilities located at a border control point used by a number of Iranian-backed militant groups, including Kata’ib Hezbollah and Kata’ib Sayyid al Shuhada,” Kirby said. “The operation sends an unambiguous message; President Biden will act to protect American coalition personnel. At the same time, we have acted in a deliberate manner that aims to de-escalate the overall situation in both Eastern Syria and Iraq.”

The site the US struck on Thursday is believed to be used as part of a weapons smuggling operation by the militias, according to a US official. The strikes were conducted to degrade the groups’ ability to carry out attacks and to send a message about the recent attacks, the official said.

Decision made from the ‘top down’

The decision to target the site in Syria was made from the “top down,” a defense official said. Austin told reporters that Biden had authorized the strike on Thursday morning, after he had recommended the President take action.

“We’re confident in the target we went after,” Austin said on a flight back to Washington from San Diego on Thursday. “We know what we hit. We allowed and encouraged the Iraqis to investigate and develop intelligence, and that was very helpful to us in refining the target.”

Kirby said Biden authorized the strikes after consulting with US allies, including coalition partners, and that they had taken place at about 6 p.m. ET.

Yeah, I’m sure Joe was really keyed in and had to make the hard decision.

I know you might be thinking: “oh well, Donald Trump also bombed Syria.”

However, I assure you, this is not the same thing.

Donald Trump didn’t really have any idea what was going on with the government before he got in office, and then he would do things just to try to keep the Jews off of his back.

Joe Biden on the other hand is not even a real president (aside from the fact he wasn’t really elected). He is just a senile old man, and he is surrounded by the most cunning of Jews, who are making all of his decisions for him.

I told you there were going to be wars.

Obviously, making the first strike in Syria doesn’t mean that this will be the first war – but it might be.

As I’ve explained, there is a list of countries that need to be somehow taken out. The biggest and most important obviously is China, but that would be a real war, and as I’ve said, I think they are more likely to just start lighting fires everywhere than to say, start a war in Taiwan right off the bat.

You’re going to see escalations everywhere. The most likely next move here is to move more troops into Syria, and just start slowly building that back up.

Then you’ll start to see moves against Iran, of course, and basically we’re going to go back to full 2005 style war everywhere. Some part of it might also relate to acclimating the American people to being at war again, but I don’t think that what the American people think really matters anymore. We already have a junta.

If you’ll let them lock you in your house for a year, you’ll get on a plane and go fight and die in some stupid war that no one can explain the point of.

^ We would be better off if he just fucked off... false hopes = misguided energy, and complacency.

I guess the elite know they have no better steam valve to control the right with at the moment, so he's back in the picture.

Meanwhile real opposition gets imprisoned...

I remember the good old days, when 90+ year olds in nursing homes lived forever. Darn this pesky virus.

Exactly, the reason Trump wasn't impeached is because they need him around to keep the left/ right paradigm going.

Biden is the result of a rigged election. The people of the United States did not elect him.

We are ruled by people we dont see... well most people dont see them.

They were done with Trump... its time to grab the guns now... and they will try... but Id like to see the technocrat elite lose for once.

This lengthy article by Jeff Rense was written in January 2021 and seems outdated to me, but the blog Robert David Steele is associated with has just posted it.

Rense speculates about the items peeking out of Biden's shirt sleeve during a debate with President Trump.
