A plane carrying Eduardo Campos, a front-runner for the Brazilian presidency, crashed in the coastal town of Santos, São Paulo state

One of the frontrunners in the Brazilian presidential election has been killed in a plane crash in São Paulo.

Eduardo Campos, 49, died after his private jet crashed while landing in the city of Santos, São Paulo state, at 10am local time on Wednesday.
Mr Campos, who was the leader of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), died alongside the two pilots of the Cessna 560XL, and four members of his campaign and press team.

In a statement, the PSB said: "The Brazilian Socialist Party has the painful duty of announcing the death [of] its president, former governor of Pernambuco, Eduardo Campos, our candidate to the presidency.

"We lost Eduardo Campos when Brazil needed most his patriotism, his detachment, his fearlessness and his competence.

This was Campos' running mate - nominated as VP. She is an environmentalist who is a very different style of person to Campos - ideologically at least. She is expected to benefit politically from Campos' death.
Maria Osmarina Marina Silva Vaz de Lima[1](born 8 February 1958) is a Brazilian environmentalist and politician. Ms. Silva was a colleague of Chico Mendes, who was assassinated for defending the Amazon environment.[2] She was a member of theWorker's Party (PT) until 19 August 2009 and served as a senator before becoming environmental minister in 2003. In 1996, Ms. Silva won the Goldman Environmental Prizefor South & Central America.[3] In 2007, the United Nations Environment Program named her one of the Champions of the Earth[4] and the 2009 Sophie Prize.[5] Running in the 2010 Brazilian elections for the Green Party (PV), she earned 19.33% of the popular votes.[6]

In 2010, she, along with Cécile Duflot, Monica Frassoni, Elizabeth May and Renate Künast, were named by Foreign Policy magazine to its list of top global thinkers,[7] for takingGreen mainstream. In 2012 she was one of the eight people chosen to carry the flag into opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games.[8]

In April 2014, Eduardo Campos announced his name for the Brazilian Presidential election, naming Marina Silva as vice president.[9] After Campos's death in a plane crash on August 13th, she is the favorite to run for the presidency of Brazil in the October 2014 elections

Some more detail on Campos (from zero hedge)

Campos' beliefs include:

He has pledged to expand social welfare programs introduced by rousseff’s predecessor Lula and scaling back government intervention in the economy.

Campos, born Aug. 10,1965, would propose a bill to grant the central bank full independence with fixed terms for its director, establish clear rules to regulate fuel and electricity prices, and seek to negotiate bilateral trade accords without the south american bloc Mercosur. Campos has also pledged to reduce red tape for businesses and citizens and cut by almost half the 39 federal ministries.

During his first six years as governor of the northeastern state of Pernambuco, homicide rates fell 39 per-cent and the economy grew 5.1 percent annually, faster than the national average of 3.7 percent.

The Economist provides some color on Mr. Campos:

EDUARDO CAMPOS is both modern manager and old-fashioned political boss. As governor of the poor, north-eastern state of Pernambuco, he has attracted private investment, brought private managers into state hospitals, introduced elements of performance-based pay for teachers and made some schools operate a full eight-hour day, rather than the four-hour shifts common in Brazil.

He is also the leader of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) and had long been its presumptive candidate to challenge President Dilma Rousseff of the ruling Workers' Party (PT) in a presidential poll next year. One thing he lacked was national name-recognition. That started to change on October 5th, when the PSB announced an alliance with Marina Silva, a popular environmental activist and, like Mr Campos, former minister in the cabinet of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Two days earlier the country’s highest electoral court had refused to register the Sustainability Network, a party being set up by Ms Silva, on the grounds that it had failed to submit the 492,000 supporting signatures that new parties must collect.

Rather than join one of a shoal of tiddler parties or withdraw from the fray, she unexpectedly plumped for the PSB, splashing her and Mr Campos's faces on the front pages of newspapers and covers of magazines. The decision about which of them will challenge Ms Rousseff will be made early next year. Polls put Ms Silva ahead of Mr Campos in a head-to-head contest with Ms Rousseff (who beats both of them). Would Mr Campos settle for the vice-presidency?

His policies don't seem out of the ordinary. Independence of the Central Bank from government is common ... Though removing red tape means culling the bureaucracy ... and that would inflame the Brazilian Reds.

Black box 'did not record Campos flight'

The black box recovered from the wreckage of the plane crash that killed Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos did not record his flight, Brazilian Air Force (FAB) says.

It said the audio recording FAB experts had analysed was not related to the flight that crashed on Wednesday.

A spokesman said they were trying to determine what the recording was.

Mr Campos and six others died when his private jet crashed in bad weather in the port city of Santos near Sao Paulo.

"The two hours of audio, the maximum recording capacity of the equipment, which were received and validated by certified technicians, were not of the flight of 13 August," air force spokesman Pedro Luis Farcic said in a statement (in Portuguese).

"It is not yet possible to determine the date of the dialogue recorded in the CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder), given that this equipment does not record this information," he continued, adding that an investigation would determine what may have happened.
