Surely there should be an International Law to prohibit countries from dumping plastic at sea.

Not only does plastic kill marine life and choke seabirds, but toxic fragments from plastic can end up in the seafood we eat.

All mussels sampled from UK coastlines and supermarkets were found to contain tiny shards of plastic and other debris in a new study.

"The scientists behind the report said microplastic consumption by people eating seafood in Britain was likely "common and widespread".

Though they were less certain about the resulting impact on human health, the research team emphasised the importance of further studies to determine any potential harm as a result of people eating plastic.

In samples of wild mussels from eight coastal locations around the UK and eight unnamed supermarkets, 100 per cent were found to contain microplastics or other debris such as cotton and rayon.

Every 100 grams of mussels eaten contains an estimated 70 pieces of debris, according to the researchers, whose study is published in the journal Environmental Pollution."

Plastic and Human Health: A Micro Issue?

Abstract

Microplastics are a pollutant of environmental concern. Their presence in food destined for human consumption and in air samples has been reported. Thus, microplastic exposure via diet or inhalation could occur, the human health effects of which are unknown. The current review article draws upon cross-disciplinary scientific literature to discuss and evaluate the potential human health impacts of microplastics and outlines urgent areas for future research. Key literature up to September 2016 relating to accumulation, particle toxicity, and chemical and microbial contaminants was critically examined. Although microplastics and human health is an emerging field, complementary existing fields indicate potential particle, chemical and microbial hazards.

Plastics are a scourge of humanity (and indeed the earth) as far as im concerned, and as touched on in another thread, plastic leeching into food is yet another issue.

I feel it should be done away with at least for food and beverage packaging etc, ie stuff that people tend to discard vs. plastic used for manufactured goods for example (which still ultimately gets discarded, but just not as often imo)
I remember the good old days, when 90+ year olds in nursing homes lived forever. Darn this pesky virus.

This is so fucking old now...
The only people who will suffer will be consumers when they tax you more with ideas like plastic bottle deposits..
They will get the public to demand these ideas as well.
Corps dont wish to spend money out of plant based plastics..but never stop adding more plastic packaging.
Time to remove the Rockefeller Dupont dinosaurs petro-fication of the nation, end the drug war & grow shit loads of good hemp.

Also no one is asking the question...why do we need water in bottles in the 1st place.
Clean water should be a human right!

It's a very clever trick. More taxation for the average Joe Public, whilst the Corporations are exempt.

That said, there is a massive problem.

What are the solutions?

In the "old days" I remember reusable glass bottles, instead of plastic and paper bags instead of plastic bags. Surely we can return to these
examples.

I do believe the waste being dumped by Industrial Corporations is being down-played. I don't hear the corporate media being overly critical of the Corporations who reign supreme, instead they are critical of populations.

Domestic waste in some countries is being outsourced to other countries who will dispose of the waste at sea. It's madness.

How many stories do we have to hear about marine life being killed, before plastic dumping by Governments and Corporations is outlawed.

One attempt at a solution for micro plastics is Graphene filters Roast...this can also be used for desalination so no need for people not to have clean drinking water in all countries.

They've marketed clean water to the public & now is stupid prices over a fucking pound for some water??

Pure madness Bizarro Braindead Britain...loons running the assylum.
