The charger for my laptop packed up last night. & so of course, what with the battery in the lappy being totally fucked, the laptop went down about 2 minutes afterwards.

I suppose I should be thankful that it didn't happen when I was asleep in bed, because the fucking thing nearly caught fire....it was red-hot and omg the smell....

Went to Aria PC this afternoon for a cheap replacement, and they DIDN'T FUCKING HAVE ONE ffs. Rubbish Aria.

www.aria.co.uk/

^They are usually very good tho.

Anyway, amazingly, the local pound shop DID have one in stock....a universal thingy one with adaptors/power settings for all laptops. Cost a bit more than a pound however.... :P

Blimey that sounds dangerous. You should get a new laptop.

I happened to be in currys again the other day....they will soon be bringing out windows 8.1. It will look more like windows 7.??..the guy didn't explain it very well.

All the Laptops they had were touch screen, but still had keys.

My mended laptop is still going strong. :crossed:

I should indeed get a new laptop phe, because the problem is that when the battery gets as fucked as the one in this one now is, you have to leave the charger plugged in all the time for it to work. And of course the chargers weren't meant/designed for that kind of usage.

I leave this lappy constantly turned on for days at a time....with the charger constantly plugged in....not good eh....

The answer for me I think is to have a proper desktop computer for main usage at home (I've got a very good custom-built one already....just needs a new hard drive fitting), and something like a Chromebook to use for when I'm not sat here in my little 'computer room' (converted cupboard under the stairs :P ).

Glad to hear that your mended laptop is still going strong.

I would be worried about keeping the charger on all the time, even though my battery only lasts about 2 mins now. (I turn it off when I go to sleep)

Tip from computer repairman....

Take your battery out and just use the charger if at home. The battery will then last a long time. The battery should also be allowed to run down...so it kind of remembers to charge back up.

I finally got round to updating my Win 8 machine to Win 8.1 and I have to say I'm not overly impressed with the desktop solution. The start button is kind of back but in a pretty crap incarnation, and you can't turn the bloody thing off, so now I have to f-ing start buttons because I'm happy with the third party one I use. The other annoyance is the fact that the popup keyboard doesn't popup in the desktop view, which is f-ing stupid! It used to popup in windows 7 just fine! Windows 8 is Windows 7 FFS with a crap interface for the desktop, so MS are just being c**ts as usual trying to force people to use their Metro interfarce.

On the upside the update went pretty smoothly with no major issues to speak of. It seems a little snappier over all hopefully I'm not just imagining that. There were quite a few driver updates which seem to have improved things generally as well. I have a Samsung ATIV 700 which has a Wacom digitizer for drawing and writing with. Wacom released a new driver last week and since the upgrade the drawing experience is much more pleasant, so I'm much happier now.

I also spent a little time giving my coffee machine a bit of tlc with it's regular descale which didn't have the desired effect as the water flow was still too low after descaling. So I had to strip bits down in an effort to find the source of its woes. I finally found the problem and the fix was easy in the end when I cleared the 0.6mm hole which was blocked. Which meant I had some decent coffee to guzzle while sorting out the Win 8.1 update.

All in all the weekend worked out well and was nice a productive.

Has anyone heard anything from Cantata and here computer problems?

@Phepny & DG,

Is there anything we can do to help her out?

If she's not back online this evening (tuesday) then I shall phone her Frog, see what's going on.

Perhaps if you're around at the time I call her, we might to be able to help her out in some way.

The computer is still waiting/being repaired.

Cantata knows that she is welcome to use my Chromebook.

Just a case of her having to wait for the repairman to sort hers then.

Phe, if she does take you up on your kind offer & you send her your Chromebook by post, make sure you package it really well, lots of bubble wrap etc.
