This is just horrible!! :(

gma.yahoo.com/plant-explosion-hurts-120-levels-homes-045222115--abc-news-topstories.html
A fire and chemical explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant in a small town north of Waco, Texas, sent at least 180 people to hospitals, flattened homes and prompted widespread evacuations.

news.yahoo.com/police-report-fertilizer-plant-explosion-near-waco-texas-015859240.html
"I've never seen anything like this," McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said. "It looks like a war zone with all the debris."

I can't count the times I've driven back & forth through West. It's a tiny little town. The kind that if you're driving over 40mph and blink, you'd miss it. Very small, tight-knit Czech community. Always remember having kolaches from The Little Czech Bakery there. People would drive in from all over Texas to get 'em. Hell, even some from out of state!!

Having been to this very small place many times before I can honestly say that this WILL shake and devastate that whole region for the rest of their lives. My God, it's a wonder there's anything or anybody left still standing or alive after the blast shown in the above video!!! One of the comments left in one of the news story links above said that they felt it and they were in southwest Oklahoma!! That's well over a hundred miles away!!!

Regardless of what this "is", it's a heartbreaking tragedy. As with all other happenings I won't jump to any kind of hasty conclusions about this because accidents do happen. Carelessness does happen. Fertilizer IS highly flammable AND dangerous under the right [wrong?] conditions. I just really hope to God that there wasn't any kind of foul-play involved.

News now reporting that the figures are between 5 and 15 people dead and over 160 injured. It's very sad.

Yep... you need a permit round these parts to get ammonium nitrate (nitrogen fertiliser) in dry powder form, they banned sales to just anyone as it can be used as an explosive.

masscasualty drill at north TX hospital this week..preparations yesterday and day before, drill today

http://northhillshospital.wordpress....-only-a-drill/

North Hills Hospital is proud to be hosting one of the largest emergency preparedness drills ever held in the state of Texas this week. We will be partnering with the North Central Texas Trauma Regional Advisory Council (NCTTRAC) and first responders from throughout North Texas to test our equipment and processes so that when a real disaster happens, we’re all ready to respond.

This drill is even timelier in the wake of the bombings at Monday’s Boston Marathon. Our prayers go out to the victims involved, and we are proud of the first responders – EMS, fire, police, race workers, and hospital staff - who so bravely cared for the injured.

If you live near North Hills Hospital, you will see a lot of activity in our parking lots over the next three days as the NCTTRAC sets up a mobile 140-bed hospital, along with dozens of ambulances, several AMBUS (multi-patient ambulances), and helicopters. This is only a drill and will simulate a hospital evacuation, something that might be necessary in the event of a tornado, hurricane, earthquake, or prolonged power failure.

Set-up for the drill will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, with the drill occurring on Thursday. At no time will regular patient care be affected, as the drill will use only “actor” patients and be confined to non-patient care areas and the parking lot. Tune in to our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/northhillshosp) and Instagram feed (@NorthHillsHospital) for pictures of the drill throughout the week.

The hospital is 80-ish miles from the explosion site.

I almost don't even want to type this, I don't want to give this thought power in my mind OR in the real world [ya know, speak it and it shall be] but I have to be honest. I have a very bad feeling about things to come. You guys know I've never been one to jump on the doom-and-gloom train, but I just can't shake this feeling. With everything that's happened in the last few months and all this here lately, it won't take much more to cause things to go in a very bad direction.

One more such event and the words "martial law" just might come into play and it'll only be a hop, skip and a jump to there being armed military on the streets of Anytown, USA. Setting up check points and all that goes with it. Mind you, it'd have to be something pretty major. Something without a doubt deemed "terror" related. And if this thing in West comes back with ANY kind of tell-tale signs of funny business, well that's one more box ticked for them to take matters of national security to the next level.

We are in very turbulent times guys. All fear-porn aside, I am VERY worried & concerned!!

I am sorry to say that I can't disagree.

This was todays DM front page picture, doesn't it look exactly like one of those Holowood end times movie posters?

That was a shockingly powerful blast. Surprising that there wasn't many more deaths. And such a little community too from what phem was saying :(

I hope that mass casualty drill was just an incredible coincidence.

Yeah...it's all just too much....if it's not one thing; it's another......

Maybe it's just a matter of perception(being much older now), but the 90's thread got me thinking about how grim everything has been in recent years. The media loves drill into our heads that we're living in a Post911 Era...and it does seem like things have become increasingly shitty since then. Maybe they always were this bad....

I guess all you can do is take it day by day and try to enjoy the little things in life while it's still here to enjoy! :spliff:
