US President Barack Obama has toured Robben Island - the jail in which Nelson Mandela was kept for 18 years.

He said he and his family were "deeply humbled" to visit the prison once inhabited by Mr Mandela - who remains critically ill in hospital.

Mr Obama went on to give a speech at the University of Cape Town and launch a multi-billion-dollar electricity initiative.

The US leader did not visit Mr Mandela, but met the Mandela family in private.

Security is likely to have been strengthened during this final Cape Town leg of his time in South Africa, says the BBC's Karen Allen who is there, following clashes on Saturday between riot police and anti-Obama protesters in Soweto.

Excuse me while I go and puke.

Eww, yeuk! How they creep on, over, up and around one another. :barfonu: One Media Ho shafting another - or the fly landing on the shite. Whichever.

ETA: If only someone would now close that door behind O'Barmy and lock it for another 45 years.

I disagree you guys are just naturally dismissive due to living under the sceptre for so long, who wouldn't want to see the cell where Mandela was locked up for decades if they were in South Africa?

I would, and who wouldn't describe it as humbling, to experience even for a moment the confinement that an individual endured for decades, in a prison cell, perhaps not knowing whether he would ever be free again, that I would say would be a fairly natural reaction so I can't see the problem with Obama and his family going there and being touched by the experience.

They could have done it in private, but no, it has to be documented for all to see.

Mandela was at least real, stood up for what he believed in and paid the price, a big one. (can't say the same for his wife though....Winnie...she of the rubber necklass).

It's ironic but I suspect true that Prince Phillip probably had similar opinions to you about Obama visiting Mandela's cell, he probably quipped, "Now you've got him in there lock the bloody doors!" as he watched the footage on the news.
Overall I'm not that impressed with his trip so far to SA, he has neglected to mention anything about the Mining industry or police brutality against the SA working classes, I feel it would be a failed opportunity if he left SA without offering some public support and highlighting their cause.

I knew someone would day this.... and DG - it's YOU! :P

Mandela might have been "real" at the very, very, very start, way back when (although any and every visible Leader is almost ALWAYS about themselves, their egos and being The Face Of The Cause) but it's a long time since Mandela was ever real in any way. Ever before he "got out of prison" he was playing the game. And didn't old Winnie come in handy? Who took the blame for all the nasty murders ever done under Mandela's reign/leadership/say-so.

Mandela has long since been a useless Media distraction, up for the ego trip and dosh.... exactly the same as O'Barmy. And, between the two of them, they've committed more crimes than old Winnie could ever count to.

Probably. :chuckle:

But, come to think of it, he'd probably say the same thing if it was Liz in there. :larf:
