Mainstream journalism (if journalism is what it can be called) is more and more often picking up on "conspiracy/hoax" theories. Here is the latest example from The Sunday Mirror:

Was the miracle rescue of a worker from the Bangladesh clothing factory disaster a stomach-turning hoax? That's the claim of the Sunday Mirror newspaper, which quotes an unnamed factory colleague who says he walked away from the tragedy alongside Reshma Begum, who then promptly vanished from the hospital. The next thing he knew, Begum was being "pulled" from the rubble in front of TV cameras, 17 days after the building collapsed. His name is being withheld because he is now in hiding for fear of reprisals. Other anti-government campaigners and media outlets in Bangladesh also insist the rescue was staged by authorities to combat global bad publicity around worker safety.

To be honest, I've always found these "late survivors" to be rather unbelievable too - especially as I am a godless heathen who doesn't believe in miracles. :O It is so frequent to find a late survivor now, after some disaster or other, that it's almost become a Tradition.

But, above and beyond what they are reporting, mainstream media seems increasingly prepared to identify itself with the "witless, insane theories" of Conspiracy Theorists. Are they opening their minds, or just following a fashion - as they are wont to do (their livelihood depends on following and reporting fashion). And, if so, is that because more and more people are opening their minds to Conspiracy Theory?

What does opening one's mind to conspiracy theory actually entail or mean?

To some it means becoming paranoid and confused about the nature of reality.

When you say mainstream what do you mean, Glenn Beck for instance is mainstream but that doesn't mean he has the same agenda or repertoire or even interests as presenters on CSpan, or MSNBC, some conservative mainstream outlets are the natural places for CT propaganda, and using it against Obama as Beck does utterly predictable.

Maher is a Right Wing Libertarian, Stewart is Left leaning i think and Bill O is Paleo conservative:


Glenn Beck and Alex Jones are Extremist Right wingers.

Mike you make very solid points there which i agree with...

But if you say that on Sanctum Zone they will tell you Obama & Romney are both a capitalist conspiracy to stop anarchy.

Which maybe be true, but as you pointed out that doesn't mean they have the same agenda, repertoire or even interests.

As I have been permabanned from SZ for speaking my mind I have no idea what they say nowadays to sensible forum input.

In the past when I was a member they just held negative positions in true conformist style.

I think the MSM has already had a reasonable amount of conspiracy coverage because there's always been a market for it. Just think of the X-files and Dark Skies coupled with a swathe of UFO documentaries when UFOs were big in the 90s. The media knows people are drawn to the notion of secret knowledge and wondrous mysteries.
I think the difference is that conspiracies have now turned into a 'movement' as opposed to a disparate selection of theories operating largely within their own spheres. So we now have this mish-mash of notions that are strung together as some kind of 'opposition'.

It's time for conspiracy theorist theorist to be divided. Conspiracy theorist who think war and wealth hoarding are an inside job need to be separated from the CT's who are into Aliens ect. The reason i'm not so anti-Icke is because i believe he is just trying to sucker in people who are into UFO/ Reptilians and other wild stuff so he can put them on to his Anti-War/M.I.C/Monarchy/1% agenda. I was gonna try to explain this in the "give me your money suckers" thread.

For the record i have made recent attempts at the liberation of your freedom of speech.

Although your post are better suited here at TZ where the conspiracy content is more polished....tbh

Plus, people here like Chuck have sharper minds in regards to overall conspiracy skepticism.

This must be a particularly cunning ploy given nobody would have known nor cared about reptilians if it wasn't for Icke.

Myself, I think Icke is trying to sucker anybody who believes in any old bullshit and people who don't like war into thinking he's more than a clueless middle aged man spouting mumbo jumbo.

NOPE irrelevant distinction, essentially they are both just stupid people who are exposed to anarchistic, reactionary and anti-government propaganda and slogans and who take up these ridiculous positions like "Obama is a Muslim, Socialist, Clone etc" or The Batman shootings were a hoax, or Sandy Hook was a staged event with paid actors, or Jews run the economy, or even Obama paid off Wall St, which is a more realistic CTer slogan because it is anti-intellectual but is very relevant to the times and offers an ultra cynical alternative narrative to current events...this last type of slogan is the type the better CTers use like the Establishment Con's in the modern financial system.

I looked in on it today - and they have had "given to them a free 10 day extension to the appeal".... so they can rake it in a bit longer. Liars. They're just keeping the begging bowl out themselves.
