Consumer groups are predicting that the UK's other major energy suppliers will raise prices after SSE announced an 8.2% increase in domestic bills.

SSE said its average annual dual fuel energy bill would rise by £106 to £1,380 on 15 November.

One industry expert described the move as "the final nail in the coffin for affordable energy", but SSE said that many costs were beyond its control.

The decision prompted fevered political debate over who to blame for the rise.

Citizens Advice is expecting an "avalanche" of increases but has called on the other energy firms to freeze prices.

"This price rise will be a blow for stretched budgets," said the charity's chief executive Gillian Guy.

"I hope other energy firms show an understanding of their customers' financial situation by not raising their prices this winter.

"Many households are facing a daily battle try to make their frozen incomes cover mounting energy, food and travel costs. Further increases will push people into poverty."

Picked just the right time of year to announce this didn't they....

"We make about 5% margin... that's not the reason why prices are going up" - SSE Director of Customer Services Tony Keeling

Yes well Tony Keeling......YOU will be personally responsible for old people dying this winter because they can't afford to heat their homes. I hope you can live with yourself.

Pile up

The unexpected collision of one or more things
The Labour party was loosing its core vote,
and in trying to extricate itself from the control of the unions was seeming to move even more to the right.
Then
Ed Miliband announces a freeze on Energy prices if labour wins Next election.

This seems to be a very popular announcement

The conservatives find it hard to counter this proposal.

The Daily mail launches attack on Ed Miliband's father over a statement he made in the 1930's as a seventeen year old.( Incidentally when the Daily Mail was still in full support of Hitler.)

It seems the ground has been staged for a good old fashioned left right election in the next year or so.

But now the labour party is even more tightly controlled by boys with the right school ties, and even the modified voice of workers through their union controllers are to be excluded in exchange for a temporary price freeze in one sector is this any more than a pretend collision for the cameras?
Still things pile up.

Maybe it would be worth looking deeper into the Siliyband's clan and their deep pro EU Marxist roots. Party politics are irrelevant if indeed they ever where really relevant as far as the voting public are concerned. There is a political agenda at play and no party will divert from meeting the prescribed objectives.

There's more at play with these price increases these days, as it would seem to support the case for opening up Britain to environmental devastation at the hands of fracking interests.

Ed Davey: I wear a jumper at home to keep energy bills down, says minister as British Gas raises prices by 10%
The Energy Secretary said it is possible to keep bills down by taking energy efficient measures

Ed Davey, the Energy Secretary, has said he wears a jumper at home and has switched energy supplier to keep his bills down, amid consumer fears that rising energy prices will make their homes too expensive to heat.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/ed-davey-i-wear-a-jumper-at-home-to-keep-energy-bills-down-says-minister-as-british-gas-raises-prices-by-10-8889452.html

Downing Street: People faced with rising energy bills should consider wearing jumpers
David Cameron believes that millions of people facing rising energy bills should consider "wrapping up warm" and wearing jumpers, Downing Street has indicated.

British Gas yesterday announced that it is raising its energy prices for 8million customers by 9.2 per cent, a week after its rival SSE announced similar hikes. Other major companies are expected to follow suit.

Asked about whether people should "wrap up warm" and wear jumpers, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "Clearly, he is not going to prescribe the actions that individuals should take but if people are giving that advice that is something that people may wish to consider.

Well, David Cameron did say that people should "punish" British Gas by switching to another supplier.... which, after all, is tremendously BIG of him coz no one would have thought of that without his super-brain being in on things; and, obviously, because Dave knows all the other gas suppliers are just SO much cheaper it will make a HUGE difference; and because the government itself has no intention of punishing British Gas or anyone else for joining in the overt robbery of the people of the Nation's money....

What a Leader, eh?

And still we all sit leaving them all in place and paying up when we must.... We have to admit: we do kind of all deserve it, in a way. We don't even stick up for the old (and it will be our turn inevitably one day), or the sick and poor, or children. Just "moan, moan, moan" then pay up.

I think people are missing the big picture here on these items under discussion. Reading through the exchanges demonstrates how useless and ineffectual these people are and how dishonest, out of touch (wilfully ignorant) and intellectually corrupt they are in pursuit of the agenda.

Climate change and the global Co2 tax is a proven fraud and yet these so called representatives are ignoring that FACT! The price hikes that we are witnessing now are nothing compared to what's coming down the line once these leaches pass this nonsense!

Topical Questions

T1. [900538] Steve McCabe (Birmingham, Selly Oak) (Lab): If he will make a statement on his departmental responsibilities.

The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change (Mr Edward Davey): Since the last Energy and Climate Change questions we have been busy. The Energy Bill is continuing its progress through Parliament and we hope that it will achieve Royal Assent by the end of the year. That will help deliver the modernised infrastructure and cleaner energy that the country needs to meet our energy security requirements and climate change obligations. The House might be interested to know the latest figures we have on investment: we have seen at least £35 billion invested in increased electricity infrastructure alone since 2010, a 56% year-on-year increase in renewable energy investment and a doubling of renewable electricity generation under this Government. Also, our policies to help the fuel poor are in place for the winter.

All the time people remain wilfully ignorant and held by the monkey trap they will do nothing, in the vein hope that they can manage to cling on to the crumbs offered by the state. We need some serious personal pain put upon these Statist enablers before the idiots will realise that they need to let go of a little in order to regain everything.

^^ True dat ^^

And you know something else - when times do get really tough and harsh, you can't even go out and collect fallen wood and set a fire in the grate/s of your home - because that is forbidden by the councils in most properties (except the big, country houses, of course, where they all still have their cigars and brandy in front of huge roaring fires, despite the central heating being on. It looks so nice, one knows).

Candles anyone?????

Government and National Grid plan emergency measures to prevent blackouts
The Government and the National Grid are developing emergency measures to prevent blackouts across Britain, as the country’s energy supply faces its biggest strain in years.

Users will be financially incentivised to turn their power off for short periods at peak times, easing the burden on the national system, while energy companies that had planned to decommission power plants will be paid to “bring them back up and running at times of stress”.

An electricity black out would be an absolute disaster for the country - how would they keep up the relentless brainwashing of the masses with televised propoganda without the aid of electricity ???

MPs are to question the Big Six firms about price hikes, however, only one firm is putting its chief executive up to be quizzed.

Energy firms should give back direct debit billions to clients, says minister
Energy companies sitting on billions of pounds of customers’ money should either give it back or start paying interest on the cash, a minister will say.

Greg Barker, the energy minister, will challenge the Big Six companies over the money they hold from customers who pay a fixed sum by direct debit.
Even when energy bills are rising, some customers are running up surpluses. Some estimates suggest the companies are sitting on as much as £2 billion, earning £36 million a year in interest.
Consumer groups say that getting the companies to refund that money is extremely difficult.
Sources said that Mr Baker would tell the companies at a Whitehall meeting to “come clean” and make a public statement of how much they hold and disclose how many customers are in credit.
Mr Barker will raise the example of Ovo Energy, a small firm that pays 3 per cent interest on cash surpluses it holds.

Ovo Energy is mentioned again in this article.
