Officers across the region will also be on patrol morning and night to catch people who flout the law

Revellers are being offered up to £200 to report their friends who drink and drive this Christmas.
Police have announced the move in a crackdown on intoxicated drivers who get behind the wheel.
Anyone who reports their friends will be rewarded up to £200 if they're eventually charged and prosecuted.
Inspector Greg Jennings, of WMP, said: "It is the same story every year, people think it is acceptable to have a few drinks with their family or friends and then get behind the wheel.
"In many cases they wouldn't dream of drink driving, or taking drugs, at other times of the year but they lose their common sense at Christmas.

Peculiar how the "authorities" like whistleblowers in some circumstances, but not in others. "Do our job for us". Ho hum.

I hate drink-driving. I knew people who died because of it (and they were not the drink drivers. Do drink drivers ever kill themselves, or is it always someone else). But there is something that makes my skin crawl when "authorities" ask people to report one another for monetary reward.

Agree ^

I would never drive under the influence of anything, and wouldn't let anyone else do so either.

That's how it should be done....kindly but firmly take a friends car keys off them if they are going to do it....that's your responsibility when someone you know is drunk or whatever and their judgement is a bit skewed....not to grass them up to the police.

I hope not, but you never know.

The police offering financial reward to grass your friends up is pretty low though.

My bet is Yes, phe. Just when we think they've gone as low as they possibly could, they show us another level of Down.

They don't offer people £5 to report a child they think might be in danger.

No, they don't, cantata.

Nice Christmas present to get from your festive "friend", as opposed to doing what DG said: take their keys off them and pay £20 for a taxi to take them home.

Yes, hopefully anyone who is out with others, that they consider too drunk to drive, will do the right thing and call a Taxi, instead of being tempted by £200.00.

It's a sudden enough turnabout anyway. Up until recently, the police have been "training" people to NOT get involved in anything of a dodgy nature at all, but to call them. It's left muggers free to run off down streets simply watched by people as they call the cops (who may or may not arrive within the hour).

Now, courtesy of the Cut Backs, they want the public to do their job for them? :conf: And if it's cheaper (as it must be for them to call for it) for the public to get £200 per grass-up, how much are they paying themselves?

I just had a look on this forum to see what the police had to say about it, but there's nothing up yet. Some funny posts on there about the Government.

Yea, it's ok to snitch people who drink and drive, but how about snitching about REAL criminals who do much worse? Nobody cares as long somebody profits.

But drinking + driving = disaster, I will end up in a crash eventually.
