Denmark may soon be the first country in the world to issue a ban on non-therapeutic circumcision of boys. Meanwhile, Israel tries hard to block changes that are broadly perceived in Europe as a clear step forward in children's human rights.

In two fresh statements, Danish doctors express deep concern over ritual circumcision of boys. The Danish Society of Family Physicians, whose 3,000 members include two thirds of all general practitioners in Denmark, announced in December that circumcision of underage boys with no proper medical indication is nothing short of mutilation. In a separate statement, the overarching Danish Medical Association recommended earlier this week that non-therapeutic male circumcision should wait until the boy or young man is old enough to provide informed consent. An editorial in Jyllands-Posten, the second largest national newspaper in Denmark, urged the Danish government yesterday to ban ritual circumcision of underage boys, and a result poll among readers of BT, another large national newspaper, showed that 87 percent of well over 26,000 votes were in favour of such a ban.

Not surprisingly, Israel has a quite different view on this matter. In December 2013, an Israeli delegation of Knesset politicians travelled to Paris in an attempt to overturn a visionary, human rights-based resolution that was passed by a comfortable majority of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on 1 October 2013. The PACE resolution 1952 recommends that member states start moving towards abolishing all kinds of physical assaults on children, including non-therapeutic circumcision of boys and girls. The Council of Europe is the continent’s leading human rights organization with a current total of 47 member states, each of which has signed the European Convention of Human Rights. Israel is neither a member, nor has it signed the European Convention of Human Rights but, since 1957, Israel has held observer status in the Council of Europe.......

Boys being circumcised on religious grounds is not good...but it's worse for the girls in some cultures.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_mutilation

Female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.".FGM is practised as a cultural ritual by ethnic groups in 27 countries in sub-Saharan and Northeast Africa, and to a lesser extent in Asia, the Middle East and within immigrant communities elsewhere.[8] It is typically carried out, with or without anaesthesia, by a traditional circumciser using a knife or razor. The age of the girls varies from weeks after birth to puberty; in half the countries for which figures were available in 2013, most girls were cut before the age of five.
The practice involves one or more of several procedures, which vary according to the ethnic group. They include removal of all or part of the clitoris and clitoral hood; all or part of the clitoris and inner labia; and in its most severe form (infibulation) all or part of the inner and outer labia and the fusion of the wound. In this last procedure, which the WHO calls Type III FGM, a small hole is left for the passage of urine and menstrual blood, and the wound is opened up for intercourse and childbirth. The health effects depend on the procedure but can include recurrent infections, chronic pain, cysts, infertility, complications during childbirth and fatal bleeding.
Around 125 million women and girls in Africa and the Middle East have undergone FGM. Over eight million have experienced Type III, which is predominant in Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan. The practice is an ethnic marker, rooted in gender inequality, ideas about purity, modesty and aesthetics, and attempts to control women's sexuality. It is supported by both women and men in countries that practise it, particularly by the women, who see it as a source of honour and authority, and an essential part of raising a daughter well.
There has been an international effort since the 1970s to eradicate the practice, culminating in a unanimous vote in 2012 by the United Nations General Assembly to take all necessary steps to end it. It has been outlawed in most of the countries in which it occurs, but the laws are poorly enforced. The opposition is not without its critics, particularly among anthropologists, some of whom view the eradicationist position as cultural imperialism. Eric Silverman writes that FGM is one of anthropology's central moral topics, raising questions about pluralism and multiculturalism within a debate framed by colonial and post-colonial history

Jewish circumcision is a ritual stemming back thousands of years and is in essence a blood ritual.

Abraham was 99 when he circumcised himself to bind himself to God under the Jewish covenant. However all he did was place a small cut in the foreskin, nothing like the full scalping that has been done since Victorian times in the Anglo world.

The US is lied to that circumcision is beneficial for health reasons, when in reality foreskins are the source product for a multi-billion dollar industry surrounding growing skin for grafts and also as an ingredient for cosmetic fillers.

Victorian England introduced circumcision supposedly to try and stop boys masturbating. Major fail. Where there's a will there's a way as the saying goes. My view is that the practice was introduced to England through Bavarian Jewish Prince Albert Battenburg (subsequently Mountbatten).

Muslims believe circumcision helps cleanliness, and helps them abide with the requirement to "come to God clean".

The Danes are right though, the practice is unnecessary and completely barbaric. Hope they do ban it, even in the wails of being labelled anti-semetic and whatever other bollocks the loudmouthed Jewish lobbies will no doubt throw at them.

Indeed. It is a procedure that is not required for any "health" reason. Some males need it apparently for medical reasons, which if it helps them, then do be it.

A good friend of mine from the States regards the procedure (which was done on him as a baby) as a barbaric and unnecessary Jewish blood ritual. He's half Cherokee. He's a very "sharing" kind of person, and informed me about the US movement to "reclaim your foreskin". He actually bought some device that will stretch the remaining foreskin over time to sort of recreate what was removed.

The practice does significantly reduce sensitivity to males, and it is wrong that that we were born to have is taken away for aesthetic reasons imposed unwittingly by parents, for religious reasons, or because of lies that it is better for your health.

I'm glad that nations are starting to legislate against the procedure. Gerany tried to not that long ago, but that attempt met a howl of protest from Jewish, and presumably muslim, groups.

Mutilating genitals - especially on infants - for alleged "religious" ritual reasons is a singular, barbaric crime against humanity and must be prohibited and sanctioned worldwide!

The psychological lifelong harm is even worse than the physical violation.
But this is exactly why "they" are still doing it for "their" "god".

"The truth must be repeated over and over again,
because error is repeatedly preached among us, not
only by individuals, but by the masses. In periodicals
and cyclopaedias, in schools and universities; every-
where, in fact, error prevails, and is quite easy in the
feeling that it has a decided majority on its side."

Bizarre they go for the full scalping when Abraham only put a nick in his.

It's a many millennia years old and highly barbaric and unnecessary blood ritual.
