NATO is deploying an additional four battalions of 4,000 troops in Poland and the three Baltic States, according to a report citing US Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work.
Work confirmed the number of troops to be sent to the border with Russia, The Wall Street Journal reports. He said the reason for the deployment is Russia’s multiple snap military exercises near the Baltics States.

“The Russians have been doing a lot of snap exercises right up against the borders, with a lot of troops,” Work said as cited by the Wall Street Journal. “From our perspective, we could argue this is extraordinarily provocative behavior.”

Although there have already been talks about German troops to be deployed to Lithuania, Berlin is still mulling its participation.

“We are currently reviewing how we can continue or strengthen our engagement on the alliance’s eastern periphery,” Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday, in light of a recent poll from the Bertelsmann Foundation that found only 31 percent of Germans would welcome the idea of German troops defending Poland and the Baltic States.

London has not made its mind either, yet is expected to do so before the upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw in July.

Ahead of the deployment, NATO officials are also discussing the possibility of making the battalions multinational, combining troops from different countries under the joint NATO command and control system.

Moscow has been unhappy with the NATO military buildup at Russia’s borders for some time now.

“NATO military infrastructure is inching closer and closer to Russia’s borders. But when Russia takes action to ensure its security, we are told that Russia is engaging in dangerous maneuvers near NATO borders. In fact, NATO borders are getting closer to Russia, not the opposite,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter daily.

Poland and the Baltic States of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have regularly pressed NATO headquarters to beef up the alliance’s presence on their territory.

According to the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act, the permanent presence of large NATO formations at the Russian border is prohibited. Yet some voices in Brussels are saying that since the NATO troops stationed next to Russia are going to rotate, this kind of military buildup cannot be regarded as a permanent presence.

Russia’s Defense Ministry says it’s ready for a tit-for-tat response to any NATO military activity near Russia’s borders. As Russia’s envoy to NATO Aleksandr Grushko put it, there are no “passive observes” in the Russian armed forces and Moscow would definitely compensate militarily for an “absolutely unjustified military presence.”

Russia warns NATO of retaliation in face of military build-up

Russia says it will engage in retaliatory measures if NATO continues its plans to deploy four extra battalions in Poland and the Baltic states.

“This would be a very dangerous build-up of armed forces pretty close to our borders,” said senior Russian Foreign Ministry official Andrei Kelin on Wednesday

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Tuesday that the alliance would deploy "battalion-sized" multinational units throughout eastern member states.

The proposal was initially made by US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter on Monday amidst rising tension between the US and Russia in the Baltic region.

Tensions surged earlier this month after the US guided-missile destroyer USS Cook sailed close to a Russian naval base in the Baltic Sea, an action which resulted in the scrambling of Russian jets that buzzed the ship.

Kelin added, “I am afraid this would require certain retaliatory measures, which the Russian Defense Ministry is already talking about.”

Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that three new military divisions would be formed by the end of this year to counter what Moscow saw as “the growing capacity of NATO forces in close proximity to the Russian borders.”

NATO's arming of Ukraine

Meanwhile, speaking at a news conference with NATO's new Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Curtis Scaparrotti, Stoltenberg said NATO will continue its “defensive” and “proportionate" military build-up close to Russia's borders in "reaction to the Russian behavior in Ukraine."

Article cited is from Russia Today so may be a tad biased.
IMO NATO should never have admitted Poland and the Baltic States.
If it does kick off up there and Germany plus the UK decline to send troops then NATO is finished.
The Yanks have no stomach for boots on the ground in northern Europe either.
Best guess.
Putin salami slices the Baltic States back into a Russian federation with some extra autonomy thrown in for good measure and NATO bottles it.
OR
NATO sends in the Italians.
That'll work.

This is slightly troublesome :(

NATO is getting its big guns ready to 'fight tonight' with military drills in Russia's backyard

On May 4, Army Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti assumed command of NATO's Allied Command Operations from Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, who retired after 39 years of service.

Upon taking his post Scaparrotti wasted no time in stressing the importance of a ready, agile force that could "fight tonight" against a "resurgent" and threatening Russia.

Indeed Russia has engaged in propping up Syrian Dictator Bashar Al-Assad, had Russian planes fly aggressively towards US ships and planes, and threatened military retribution should Finland join NATO.

In response, the US is leading a series of military drills in Russia's backyard to increase readiness should Russia cross the line.

Among these exercises are Dragon Pioneer in Moldova, and Noble Partner in Georgia. Additionally, the US Army has performed it's first Sealift exercise in 15 years.

In the slides below, see how the US and NATO are increasing military readiness to deter Russian aggression.

From the US Army: "Noble Partner 16, which is scheduled to take place May 11 to 26 and will include approximately 1300 participants from the US, Georgia and the UK. The exercise is a reoccurring training event that takes place at Vaziani Training Area, Georgia."

The goal of SEDRE is to get US Army forces ready to mobilize in a moment's notice. The logistics are challenging, as the many pieces of Army hardware are awkwardly shaped and very heavy, but mobility is key.

"With an organization being able to pick-up … get ready to go to war — or any type of contingency where equipment and personnel are needed — readiness is key. That is why exercises like the SEDRE are so important to the warfight and the warfighter," Army Capt. David Wallace said of the exercise.

The SEDRE exercise, along with drills and coordination in Easter Europe will help the US and NATO establish a capable, inter operable, and ready force to protect democracies.

NATO Violates Another Treaty, Puts Massive Missile Installation in Romania

Andrew Anglin
Daily Stormer
May 12, 2016

Some will say “but why would you start a World War with Russia?”

But others, much bolder, will be like “why not start a World War with Russia?”

Because honestly – what do we have to lose?

RT:

=================================================
As a new Romanian interceptor missile base prepares to go live Thursday, Moscow has slammed NATO’s expanding defense shield, calling it a threat to security, and a violation of a key international treaty.

“The creation of a European and global missile defense shield has an adverse effect on strategic stability,” Mikhail Ulyanov, head of the Russian foreign ministry’s department for proliferation and arms control issues, said on Wednesday.

NATO will formally declare its missile defense base in the remote location of Deveselu, Romania, operational on Thursday, bringing to fruition a plan to construct a shield in eastern Europe that was first announced by George W. Bush as far back as 2007.

“Our direct interests, the interests of our national security are affected by the decision,” said Ulyanov.

The Russian official said that not only was the missile defense aimed at neutralizing Russia’s offensive capability – an accusation the Pentagon has repeatedly rejected – but that Deveselu’s MK 41 launching systems it uses could be re-equipped with offensive cruise missiles.

Ulyanov said that Washington was acting in breach of the 1987 INF treaty, under which Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan signed their respective countries up to obligations “not to possess, produce, or flight-test a ground-launched cruise missile (GLCM) with a range capability of 500 km to 5,500 km, or to possess or produce launchers of such missiles.”

The US embassy in Moscow produced a counter-statement, condemning Moscow’s allegations as “unacceptable and irresponsible.”

Loaded: US sends 5,000 tons of ammunition to Germany ‘to help NATO alliance’
Washington has dispatched more than 5,000 tons of ammunition to Germany, the largest amount in 10 years, the US military announced, adding that the shipment will help to “continue to enable the NATO alliance” and to defend its allies.
“In the largest single Europe-bound US shipment of ammunition in 10 years, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command … transported over 5,000 tons of ammunition …to the Theater Logistics Support Center Europe's ammunition depot in Miesau [Germany]

Better to have a military force on hand and not need it, than to need one and not have it on hand. Putin won't be able to creep into NATO backed countries like he has in the Ukraine.

Nato countries begin largest war game in eastern Europe since cold war

Ten-day military exercise, Anaconda-2016, will involve 31,000 troops and thousands of vehicles from 24 countries

The largest war game in eastern Europe since the end of the cold war has started in Poland, as Nato and partner countries seek to mount a display of strength as a response to concerns about Russia’s assertiveness and actions.

The 10-day military exercise, involving 31,000 troops and thousands of vehicles from 24 countries, has been welcomed among Nato’s allies in the region, though defence experts warn that any mishap could prompt an offensive reaction from Moscow.

A defence attache at a European embassy in Warsaw said the “nightmare scenario” of the exercise, named Anaconda-2016, would be “a mishap, a miscalculation which the Russians construe, or choose to construe, as an offensive action”.

Russian jets routinely breach Nordic countries’ airspace and in April they spectacularly “buzzed” the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea.

The exercise, which US and Polish officials formally launched near Warsaw, is billed as a test of cooperation between allied commands and troops in responding to military, chemical and cyber threats.

It represents the biggest movement of foreign allied troops in Poland in peace time. For the first time since the Nazi invasion of Soviet-occupied Poland began on 22 June 1941, German tanks will cross the country from west to east.

Managed by Poland’s Lt Gen Marek Tomaszycki, the exercise includes 14,000 US troops, 12,000 Polish troops, 800 from Britain and others from non-Nato countries.

Multinational operations publicised so far include an airdrop involving 1,130 parachutists over the northern Polish city of Toruń on Tuesday – including 500 US troops and 230 British ones – engineers building a bridge to carry 300 vehicles over the Vistula river and a night-time “assault” involving 35 helicopters.

Marcin Zaborowski, a Polish defence analyst at the Centre for European Policy Analysis in Warsaw, said: “In Poland we see the exercise as a reassurance measure from the US and Nato. The defence needs of central and eastern Europe are real. The scope and numbers of Anaconda are no match for the Russian exercises that go on all the time just across the border.”

But Zaborowski also acknowledged that the backdrop to the exercise was “tense, and accidents can happen”.

Anaconda-2016 is a prelude to Nato’s summit in Warsaw on 8-9 July, which is expected to agree to position significant numbers of troops and equipment in Poland and the Baltic states.

It comes within weeks of the US switching on a powerful ballistic missile shield at Deveselu in Romania, as part of a “defence umbrella” that Washington says will stretch from Greenland to the Azores.

Last month, building work began on a similar missile interception base at Redzikowo, a village in northern Poland.

The exercise comes at a sensitive time for Poland’s military, following the sacking or forced retirement of a quarter of the country’s generals since the nationalist Law and Justice government came to power in October last year.

So harsh have the cuts to the top brass been that the Polish armed forces recently found themselves unable to provide a general for Nato’s multinational command centre at Szczecin.

Insiders say morale has fallen to an all-time low since the appointment of Antoni Macierewicz as defence minister.

Professional soldiers are particularly worried about a lack of clarity surrounding the creation and role of a 17-brigade territorial army, drawn in part from the 35,000 members of Poland’s gun clubs and paramilitary groups, some of which, it is feared, are linked to the country’s racist football hooligans. Two of the volunteer brigades are set to assist the professional Polish army during Anaconda.

The Guardian understands from military sources that there has been little consultation over politicians’ long-term vision for the volunteers, described last week by the plenipotentiary minister Grzegorz Kwaśniak as “a fifth force after land, sea, air and special forces”.

A western defence expert confirmed that there was concern about government interference in Poland’s military. “Poland is highly regarded internationally. In the past 15 years, they spent a lot of money and created one of the best armies in the region. They made big sacrifices in Afghanistan. They lost 40 soldiers. It is not clear what the government thinks it needs to improve,” he said.

That's part of what they are paid for. No doubt Russia is going to play the "we're being provoked" rhetoric, but it's better to stand up to a strong man like Putin earlier, than later. Give that man an inch and he will take a mile.
