German police have carried out a series of raids, targeting people suspected of posting hate content on social media.
The co-ordinated raids on 60 addresses were the first time the authorities had acted on this issue in such a way.
The aim is to tackle what police called "a substantial rise in verbal radicalism".

Typical crimes included "glorification of Nazism [and] xenophobic, anti-Semitic and other right-wing extremism", they said.
Holger Munch, president of Germany's federal criminal police authority, the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) said: "Today's action makes it clear that police authorities of the federal and state governments act firmly against hate and incitement on the internet."
He said politically motivated hate crime on the internet had increased significantly in the wake of the European refugee crisis.
Last year, Germany took in up to one million migrants and refugees.

"Attacks on refugee shelters are often the result of radicalisation which begins in social networks," Mr Munch said.
Raids in 14 provinces
Much of the alleged hate speech took place in a secret Facebook group between July and November 2015, police said.
The raids were carried out across 14 German provinces, involving 25 police departments.
Incitement of racial hatred is a crime under German law and a person can be jailed for up to five years in a case of inciting "hatred against a national, racial, religious group or a group defined by their ethnic origins".
Facebook, Twitter and Google have all come under fire in Germany for failing to remove hate speech from their platforms promptly.
Under pressure from the German authorities, the three tech firms agreed at the end of last year to delete such speech from their services within 24 hours.

Facebook also agreed to a series of further measures including:
Partnering with a German group of multimedia service providers to solve the problem
Launching a task force to deal with hate speech on the internet
A campaign to promote "counter speech" in German, drawing in experts to develop ways to combat racism through discussions on social media.

Holger Münch ---- Thomas de Maizière ---- Heiko Maas

Berlin (AFP) – German police on Wednesday launched nationwide raids targeting social media users who posted racial hatred on Facebook and other online networks.

Police swooped on the homes of some 60 suspects across 14 of Germany’s 16 states, the BKA federal crime bureau said, in a crackdown on “verbal radicalism” and related criminal offences.

No arrests were made but computer equipment, cameras and smartphones were seized in the first-ever such mass raids targeting online hate crime.

Most of the suspects allegedly belonged to a neo-Nazi Facebook group whose users had posted xenophobic, anti-Semitic or other far-right messages.

BKA chief Holger Muench said police were taking a “clear stance against hate and incitement on the internet” which had increased amid the refugee crisis and was poisoning public discourse.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that “violence, including verbal violence, in any form and in any context” was “unacceptable”.

He said there are “moral principles offline and online” and stressed that “criminal law applies on the internet”.

Justice Minister Heiko Maas said that pressure had grown on internet giants such as Facebook, Google and Twitter to find and block hate speech.

“First steps have been taken,” he said, “but they are nowhere near sufficient.”

Facebook pledged in September to fight a surge in racism on its German-language network as Europe’s biggest economy became the top destination for refugees, triggering a backlash from the far right.

The US social media network said it would encourage “counter speech” and step up monitoring of anti-foreigner commentary.

Users have accused the company of double standards for cracking down swifter and harder on nudity and sexual content than on hate-mongering. (Breitbart)

Maybe these raids never happened? The german blogs are very silent about it... :ponda:

It's easy to spread info about the raids via the news agencies. Journalists will print it without further/own investigation, but many people now will think twice what they write.

If they were going to false flag(not hoax) an event, they're hardly likely not to take full advantage of the public's expectation to do something about it, even if it's only kicking in lots of doors and ruining a possible terrorist accomplice's day.

The elite Germans and French are in it together in your narrative, aren't they?

Hoax hoax hoax.. that's all I'm hearing lately coming from some peeps. What isn't being called a hoax these days?

Why the hell would they need to hoax a few arrests when they don't give a damn about kicking a few doors down or their image of being tyrants in the first place? And by the way, most people already do think twice about what they say, especially in places like Germany. They certainly don't need to create hoaxes to scare people into submission. People really do get sent to prison for excising their God given right to free speech.

I guess it won't be too long though before people start calling hoax on that one too.

Hey fellow fruit cake (dixit one of the mods here). ;)

I think you're right on the ball. It of course can have happened for real and we don't have photos to analyse or videos to unravel, so it's hard to speak with any certainty.

But, fearmongering is enough with just the suggestion people get raided and jailed for exercising their free speech. If the news reports say "people who are speaking out are being punished", then it will keep people down, even without the need to perform the actual raids, stealing of property or -expensive- jail time.

The famous experiment with the monkeys in the room and the banana comes to mind. Truly done or not (we'll never know), the message of that experiment is very strong, because it supports your idea. Similar cases are known in sociological research and other experiments, playing on the sheeple status of many people. People who are afraid to be different and go along with others just to not feel "outcast". Or "fruit cake", as it's called by Zorro here.

It's much cheaper and less work to just send a press release to the media that "60 people in 15 Bundesländer were raided" than to actually perform those -expensive- operations and be 100% honest. It can also be a mix, when just 1 house is raided, photos taken and "proof" shown, and the other 59 cases are just made up, using that 1 true story as bait.

And you don't think some freelance journalist or internet blogger is going to pop along and ask the local residents about the raids? Don't talk such shite.

I guess it won't be too long though before people start calling hoax on that one too.

Facts:
- Police raids are expensive
- Court cases are time-consuming and expensive
- Jail time is expensive and not profitable
- Many people are lazy; if they can avoid doing work, they will
- Money is the main driver of the world
- Time is money

WIth that in mind, do you see the answer to the questions "Why would they hoax...?", "why would they stage...?", "there is no need to lie about them doing it, is there...?" appearing on the horizon?

That's the thing - no one was arrested in this case, and that is very unusual...

That means all of the 'culprits' are still out there and I am sure at least one of them would tell the raid story on one of the several blogs or sites, but no...

I didn't say that story is a hoax, I said maybe it never happend.

My point was, Steven, that people do indeed get arrested in Germany for so called ''hate speech''. and not just in Germany either.

Also to state something didn't happen, especially when it's all over the media, is as good as saying it's a hoax. What's the difference?

oh shut up Gaia, you're one of the most abusive members on this forum. If i want to apply a little needed sarcasm to my posts from time to time, and the odd meme to boot, then I fucking well will. Got it. Now kindly just fuck off with your hypocritical double-moral standards. .

Ah, your stupid images and accusations are "needed sarcasm", but sarcasm of others are "aggressive abusive attacks"?

If there's anyone here who is exposing hypocrisy and preventing to fall into double-moral standards, it's me. That is because I reason from principle and not from preference. As explained numerous times before. So even that "attack" from you is unfounded.

I don't "fuck off" or "shut up", no. Like you, I have free speech. And if you "vent" my post, it only exposes your unstable position even more and yourself as not able to deal with -founded- criticism... :wissl:
