After the success of the Falklands Sting, they realised that light jets on carriers was the way to project force. The only trouble was the ridiculously risky landings. Somehow they needed to recruit a new video-game generation of "Naval Aviators". Of course, most young men die on the roads, but they still manage to sell sports cars. Maybe they could use the same techniques as the Advertisers, but dress it up as a film?

The first thing was to find a Producer, they found one marketing exploitation films who was into the whole fast cars, fast women scene. He could be found conveniently OD'd when the time was right. Next they needed someone to film it, the most famous Director of the time happened to have an unknown younger brother, fresh out of Art School; he was doing car commercials and conveniently had mounting debts.

Who'd play the staring role? Some charismatic, attractive, risk taker with a bit of intensity. Tom Cruise was the fresh-faced pretty boy who'd made a name for himself in Endless Love, followed by Risky Business. Perfect, however, he was resisting and kept asking for scripts. As a bit of a sweetener they offered him a day out taking a jet-plane(?) ride. Sounded harmless enough, but mysteriously that shake-up made him adamant he'd lead (even if he had to help with the script).

Then there's the leading lady, she'd have to be an absolute stunner to hook the boys in... I s'pose you're gonna tell me there's nothing unusual about the subsequent Kelly McGillis?

Find it hard to believe that no-one at the hearing asked who the girl giving evidence was? :ponda:

A classic piece of pre(p)-war propaganda, must-see for everyone who has missed it.

There's a lot of discussion on this forum about WWI/II, but not much about GWI/II. There should be more first hand evidence about. As I recall, in the 90s, they just said it was about the Liberation of Kuwait; that the tin-pot dictator of Iraq had invaded (unprovoked, for the oil). That he would surely push on into Saudi, where about half of the World's oil was produced.

They never mentioned that Kuwait was only made independent by the Brits in the 60s and that throughout the 70s they had to prevent reunification by force. Also that the weapons of the Iraqi forces had been supplied by Allies. Originally to be used against neighbouring Iran, a war that had saddled both sides with crippling levels of debt.

They never mentioned the Iraqi complaints about being landlocked and of their oil effectively being stolen via Kuwait. With what's happened with Fracking, in recent decades, it seems plausible that horizontal drilling was forefront tech just then. Also I always found the setting fire of the wells rather suspicious. They said it was the retreating Invaders, but it seemed a convenient way of covering up evidence of exactly what had been going on there (while providing hellish scenes for the media to broadcast). There was also the savage "Highway of Death" cluster bombing, pretty hard to justify, unless you had to make sure they weren't getting away with any physical/credible evidence.

Good points.

Kuwait is a very strange country that literally never gets named in the media (just like Oman). While all neighboring countries are mentioned, those stay very silent. I have never been there, but know people who have. It is very strict, extremely rich and like you said a British outpost in a very strategic location in the Gulf.

As happens so often, I think those burning oil fields are partly real and partly faked (not too hard to do in the early 90s after decades of film and photo manipulation).

Everyone was flabbergasted back then why the US Army did not take out Saddam Hussein, they just left him there to rule for another decade before the again completely surprising and awkward invasion of 2003 ("we are going after Saddam, ehh, I mean Bin Laden, ehh, no I meant Saddam"). The 9/11 false flag element (it was a staged event, but with false flag consequences) was already hard to sell, but the MWD bullshit was not scripted by Hill & Knowlton, the propaganda company who produced the Nayirah piece, so bad was the script.
