The hoodwinking show must go on---

Orion Passes Key NASA Flight Review – “GO” for Maiden Test Flight on Dec. 4
After a decade of hard work, numerous twists and turns, and ups and downs, NASA’s new Orion deep space crew vehicle is finally, and officially, marching towards its maiden blastoff in less than two week’s time.

The Orion spacecraft cleared one of the final hurdles to its first launch when top managers from NASA and Lockheed Martin successfully completed a key review of the vehicle’s systems ahead of the looming Dec. 4 flight test.

Gatekeepers plod on--

Orion: Spacecraft to Take Astronauts Beyond Earth Orbit
The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle is NASA's planned spacecraft to take astronauts into space beyond Earth orbit. The agency plans to run the first test flight of the spacecraft in December 2014, with crewed missions possibly following in the early 2020s.

Similar in shape to the Apollo spacecraft, Orion is supposed to carry up to six astronauts to destinations such as a captured asteroid or within reach of Mars. But this will be an upgrade to Apollo,

What is the
Electromagnetic
Spectrum?
The electromagnetic spectrum is a vast band of energy frequencies extending from radio waves to gamma waves, from the very lowest frequencies to the highest possible frequencies.

The spectrum is arranged by the frequency of its waves, from the longest, lowest energy waves to the shortest, highest energy waves.

The effects of EMR upon biological systems (and also to many other chemical systems, under standard conditions) depend both upon the radiation's power and its frequency. For EMR of visible frequencies or lower (i.e., radio, microwave, infrared), the damage done to cells and other materials is determined mainly by power and caused primarily by heating effects from the combined energy transfer of many photons. By contrast, for ultraviolet and higher frequencies (i.e., X-rays and gamma rays), chemical materials and living cells can be further damaged beyond that done by simple heating, since individual photons of such high frequency have enough energy to cause direct molecular damage.

We call the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can see directly with our eyes "visible" or "optical" light. To fully appreciate the complexity of the world around us, however, we need to rely on human-made devices to provide views of the "invisible" world in the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum we cannot see without the aid of technology -- gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet waves, infrared waves, microwaves, and radio waves

Electromagnetic Spectrum Tour
Light, heat, radio signals, and medical X-rays are all forms of electromagnetic radiation—waves moving through space that are delivered by massless particles called photons. The only thing that differentiates one type of electromagnetic radiation from any other is the energy carried by its photons. Here, take a tour of the spectrum that begins with radio waves and takes you through microwaves, infrared radiation, light, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays

Oct 07, 2014 – “An impenetrable barrier to ultra-relativistic electrons in the Van Allen radiation belts”
The energy distribution, spatial extent and particle species makeup of the Van Allen belts has been explored by several space missions. However, recent observations by the NASA dual-spacecraft Van Allen Probes mission have revealed wholly unexpected properties of the radiation belts, especially at highly relativistic (E > 2 MeV) and ultra-relativistic (E > 5 MeV) kinetic energies. In this presentation we show using high spatial and temporal resolution data from the Relativistic Electron-Proton Telescope (REPT) experiment on board the Van Allen Probes that multiple belts can exist concurrently and that an exceedingly sharp inner boundary exists for ultra-relativistic electrons. Using additionally available Van Allen Probes data, we demonstrate that these remarkable features of energetic electrons are not due to a physical boundary within Earth’s intrinsic magnetic field. Neither is it likely that human-generated electromagnetic transmitter wave fields might produce such effects. Rather, we conclude from these unique measurements that slow natural inward radial diffusion combined with weak, but persistent, wave-particle pitch angle scattering deep inside the Earth’s magnetosphere can conspire to create an almost impenetrable barrier through which the most energetic Van Allen belt electrons cannot migrate.

Mysterious Electron Storage Ring Found in Earth’s Magnetosphere

“Nature keeps on surprising us by producing long-lived harsh environments in space in regions not previously considered,” said Dr Reiner Friedel of the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Intelligence and Space Research Division, co-author of a paper reporting the discovery in the journal Science.

“This finding may impact the planning of future space missions,” he said.

Scientists Learn More about Mysterious 3rd Van Allen Belt
New research provides insight into the mysterious Van Allen radiation belts.

There are normally two of these giant bands of high-energy radiation encircling the Earth. However, researchers discovered a third and previously unknown radiation ring that only lasted for about a month back in September 2012.

Ionizing Versus Non-Ionizing Radiation
We live in a sea of radiation. In recent years, people have learned to fear the effects of radiation. They don't want to live near nuclear reactors. They are frightened by reports of links between excess exposure to sunlight and skin cancer. They are afraid of the leakage from microwave ovens, or the radiation produced by their television sets.

Several factors combine to heighten the public's anxiety about both the short-range and long-range effects of radiation. Perhaps the most important source of fear is the fact that radiation can't be detected by the average person. Furthermore, the effects of exposure to radiation might not appear for months or years or even decades.

To understand the biological effects of radiation we must first understand the difference between ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation. In general, two things can happen when radiation is absorbed by matter: excitation or ionization.
•Excitation occurs when the radiation excites the motion of the atoms or molecules, or excites an electron from an occupied orbital into an empty, higher-energy orbital.
•Ionization occurs when the radiation carries enough energy to remove an electron from an atom or molecule.

Because living tissue is 70-90% water by weight, the dividing line between radiation that excites electrons and radiation that forms ions is often assumed to be equal to the ionization of water: 1216 kJ/mol. Radiation that carries less energy can only excite the water molecule. It is therefore called non-ionizing radiation. Radiation that carries more energy than 1216 kJ/mol can remove an electron from a water molecule, and is therefore called ionizing radiation.

The table below contains estimates of the energies of various kinds of radiation. Radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, and visible light are all forms of non-ionizing radiation. X-rays, gamma-rays, and alpha- and /i>-particles are forms of ionizing radiation. The dividing line between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum falls in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum. It is therefore useful to divide the UV spectrum into two categories: UVA and UVB. Radiation at the high-energy end of the UV spectrum can be as dangerous as x-rays or gamma-rays.

Wiki articles are always filled with half truths and outright lies. Here we have a good opening and then some gatekeeping, and then doublespeak--

Health threat from cosmic rays
The health threat from cosmic rays is the danger posed by galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles to astronauts on interplanetary missions.[1][2] Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) consist of high energy protons (85%), helium (14%) and other high energy nuclei (HZE ions).[1] Solar energetic particles consist primarily of protons accelerated by the Sun to high energies via proximity to solar flares and coronal mass ejections. They are one of the most important barriers standing in the way of plans for interplanetary travel by crewed spacecraft.[3][4][5]
Material shielding can be effective against galactic cosmic rays, but thin shielding may actually make the problem worse for some of the higher energy rays, because more shielding causes an increased amount of secondary radiation, although thick shielding could counter such too.[39] The aluminium walls of the ISS, for example, are believed to produce a net reduction in radiation exposure. In interplanetary space, however, it is believed that thin aluminium shielding would give a net increase in radiation exposure but would gradually decrease as more shielding is added to capture generated secondary radiation

Deadly Radiation At and Past the Van Allen Shields
"...Besides being a threat to satellite systems, energetic particles present a hazard to astronauts on space missions. On Earth we are protected from these particles by the atmosphere, which absorbs all but the most energetic cosmic ray particles. During space missions, astronauts performing extra-vehicular activities are relatively unprotected. The fluxes of energetic particles can increase hundreds of times, following an intense solar flare or during a large geomagnetic storm, to dangerous levels. Timely warnings are essential to give astronauts sufficient time to return to their spacecraft prior to the arrival of such energetic particles."
