Soundgarden's Chris Cornell Dead at 52

Family "shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing," says rep

Chris Cornell, the dynamic vocalist and guitarist whose versatile showmanship as Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog's frontman was a signpost of the grunge era, died Wednesday night. He was 52.

Police received a 911 call at approximately 12 a.m. from a family friend, according to Michael Woody, Director of Media Relations for the Detroit Police Department. When the friend went to Cornell's hotel room at the MGM Grand casino to check on him, he "made it inside the hotel room, where he found Mr. Cornell unresponsive laying on the bathroom floor," according to Woody. EMS pronounced Cornell dead at the scene.

Detroit police are investigating the death as an apparent suicide, though Woody tells Rolling Stone that an official cause of death by the medical examiner's office is still forthcoming. The medical examiner's report is expected to be released Thursday afternoon.

Earlier on Wednesday, the singer had played a show with Soundgarden, who were midway through their tour. "His wife, Vicky, and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause," his publicist said in a statement.

Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, hanged himself, the Wayne County (Michigan) Medical Examiner's Office announced Thursday in a statement.

The cause of death has been determined as suicide by hanging, the statement said, adding that a "full autopsy report has not yet been completed."

Chris Cornell: Police Report Details Singer's Final Hours

A police report from the investigation into the death of Chris Cornell has revealed new details regarding the singer's suicide.

According to the report, obtained by the Detroit News, Cornell had a troubling telephone conversation with his wife Vicky in the hour before his death where he admitted to taking "an extra Ativan or two" and was slurring his words, reiterating Vicky Cornell's separate statement Friday morning.

The police report also fleshed out the timeline of what transpired from the time Soundgarden's Detroit concert ended to the time the singer was found dead in his hotel room's bathroom.

Soon after Soundgarden's concert ended, at 11:30 p.m., Cornell's bodyguard Martin Kirsten said he accompanied the singer to his hotel room to help fix his computer and give him two Ativan "which victim takes for anxiety," the police report states.

Soon after, Cornell and Vicky spoke on the phone, with the singer slurring his words, admitting he may have taken too much Ativan and repeatedly saying "I am just tired" before abruptly hanging up.

Following that conversation, Vicky Cornell called Kirsten to check on her husband. Despite having the key to Cornell's room, Kirsten couldn't open the door because it was latched. Kirsten then called hotel security, who told the bodyguard that they could not let him in the room because he wasn't authorized to enter it.

Despite security's refusal to assist, Kirsten then kicked open Cornell's hotel door. The bedroom door was also latched, so the bodyguard again called hotel security before ultimately kicking open that door. Upon inspecting the bathroom, Kirsten found Cornell "laying on the bathroom floor" with blood running down his mouth and a red exercise band around his neck.

According to TMZ, Cornell fastened the band to a carabiner that had been lodged into the doorframe, leaving indentation marks.

Just before 1 a.m., paramedics entered Cornell's room, removed the band from his neck and attempted CPR on the singer, who was not breathing. A doctor who later came to the scene pronounced Cornell dead at 1:30 a.m.

Dangerous profession.

Rock and popstars seem to be constantly culled by someone or something.

I don't buy suicide, obvious bullshit.

Something else at work here, whether actual murder or demonic possession.

Something haunts these stars.....maybe the folks they made the deal with for fame and riches have some connection to this.

I feel pressure has something to do with it. How do you cope with standing in front of 40 thousand adoring fans who don't know you and you have never met personally, on a nightly basis? Some can view this as business others may leave their stage ego behind and view this on a humanitarian level. It's got to twist deep into your psyche unless you're an emotionally retarded drone. Perhaps it devalues your own and their existence , you question the real price of fame and fortune and mourn losing the real Chris Cornell (Insert artist name) you grew up as.

@ Truthspoon - I'm curious exactly how much fame and fortune an artist needs to have achieved to guarantee they have been co-opted by a shadowy agency? Let's take someone like Shaun Ryder or Ian Brown, for example - did they sell their souls to the devil's agents to gain their success, or is the fact neither are as wealthy as Bono or Bob Geldof proof they are among the good guys?

It probably has something to do with the OTO.

I suspect they have a death lottery system going on like the one detailed in Franz Bardon's Fabrato the Magician.

What's your best evidence that occult practices are anything other than sensationalised nonsense? What is the evidence for the claim below?
Throughout the ages, adepts of every time and place have achieved the highest levels of magical attainment through the understanding of sound, color, number and vibration as embodied in the Kabbalah.

ps. This Bardon guy goes on about the importance of being balanced in mind, body and spirit to attain success as a mage, then dies at 51 of pancreatic problems. So much for being a great magician.

It doesn't seem likely to me that the bodyguard is lying about the doors being latched from the inside, he had called hotel security twice to have them come open the doors, which they refused, which is information that is easily verifiable. According to him, even though he had the 'key' to the main door, he ended up kicking both doors in because they were latched from the inside.

This makes the murder scenario difficult. Then there is the alleged scene inside the bathroom.

"We've learned the Soundgarden frontman secured a red elastic exercise band attached to a carabiner to the top of his hotel bathroom door. A carabiner is a device commonly used by mountain climbers which they attach to a belt to keep them from falling. The device can withstand enormous weight.

Cornell jammed the door shut with the carabiner at the top of the frame. The carabiner was jammed so tight it left an indentation in the door frame."

I'm not exactly sure how this type of thing is done (not sure I really want to know), it was reported he was found 'lying on the bathroom floor' with the elastic band wrapped around his neck. He allegedly had no suicide note.

It does seem like an extreme turn of events, to go from walking off the stage, warmly greeting and talking to his fans, having his bodyguard accompany him to his hotel room to help 'fix his computer', why fix his computer if he is going to kill himself? have the bodyguard dispense two Ativan to him (which was prescribed to him as an anti-anxiety medication), then I think the bodyguard left.

He calls his wife shortly afterward, she notices his 'slurred speech', maybe he had been drinking during the concert? fans said he left the stage several times and seemed a bit agitated, a bit 'off'.... he tells his wife he took an extra Ativan or two and tells her repeatedly that he 'is just very tired' and abruptly hangs up on her (who knows what else is said or what else was going on between the two of them in their conversation because there is only her word on this). She panics and calls the bodyguard to check on him.

The concert ended at 11:30 pm and the paramedics pronounced Chris dead just before 1:00am. It all happened very quickly, within an hour or a little over an hour of the concert ending.

Did he impulsively decide to kill himself because he was depressed and had perhaps been drinking during the concert and mixed that with prescribed medication which can compound the effects? (taking an 'extra' Ativan would not cause someone to hang themselves). He was a recovering addict and suffered from long term clinical depression but still... he was said to have been in 'good spirits' earlier and had been making plans for the future.

Could it have been erotic asphyxiation gone awry? he is said to have been found fully clothed but these things can be covered up to lessen the embarrassment for the families. Still if he actually was fully clothed then it probably wasn't of an erotic nature.

Had he done this kind of thing before? not killing himself of course, but playing with death? the way the set-up in the bathroom was done was by someone who knew what they were doing and had obviously thought about it.

Is this set-up with this type of method (the carabiner attached to the elastic band and wedged into the top of the doorframe) with the elastic band wrapped around one's throat something that a person could pull back from or stop if they changed their mind once they were starting to fall into unconsciousness? with all this 'stop breathing' and then start breathing.. stuff that people are playing around with these days, I don't know.

I'm just wondering if he absolutely intended to kill himself (which it looks like he did), but it is an extreme turn of events in a very short amount of time. For someone who was apparently very close to his children, it seems strange that he would do this, even impulsively, in this way, and not so much as leave a note.

There was a similar case recently with Craig Gill of the Inspiral Carpets. Seemingly lots to live for but still hangs himself without even leaving a note.

Annabelle, I am amazed by your complete belief in the stories these people create. Why would you believe anything those clowns in the entertainment industry/business come up with?

I know people who knew Craig Gill, so I don't have to rely on "those clowns in the entertainment industry/business" for my information in this case.

You are being very presumptuous.

I go by various sources and look at things by various angles. For instance I absolutely believe that Kurt Cobain was murdered, and I am highly suspicious of the death of Amy Winehouse as well as that of L'Wren Scott (deemed a suicide) as well as other celebrity deaths that did not add up when looked at more closely, Jimmy Hendrix (was murdered imo), Princess Diana was murdered etc..

Why you would think I would just believe anything the entertainment industry/business comes up with is beyond me.

In this case, which just happened, there is only so much to go on, I am posting what the medical examiner and police have publicly stated including the time line of events. People can make up there own minds whether or not it is believable. When something like this happens, in the first few days, there is usually nothing to go on except what is being reported by the mainstream media and official police and medical examiner reports.

Time always, well usually, brings out much more information from various angles and sources. I am looking at it right now from the information that is now available, that will change as more information becomes available, and that takes time.

edit:

So far I am hard pressed to believe, from what has been published, that the bodyguard, who had the key to the room, would make up that the doors were latched from the inside and so he had to call hotel security to let him in, hotel security refusing, he kicked in the main door and the bedroom door after calling hotel security again.

The hotel apparently fixed the damaged doors and are not renting the room/suite for the time being. If that did not happen that means he is lying and hotel security would be covering up that lie, as well as the police. Medical examiners/coroners are known to cover up celebrity deaths by deeming them suicides when they are not, some have been murders and I do think at least a couple were possibly erotic asphyxiations, covered up to off-set embarrassment.

None of that means that it is out of the realm of possibility that a well-known person in the industry has not committed suicide, a genuine suicide, especially when they have suffered from clinical depression for years and have had serious issues to deal with. Surrounding authorities are not always corrupt, the police do not always lie and cover-up, a medical examiner could give an authentic medical examiners report that is accurate, to the best of his or her knowledge. The person are people directly in the vicinity of the tragic event could be telling the truth.

The bodyguard was the last known person to be with him though there was a small time span when he was not with him. If the body guard killed him it means he would have somehow had to strangle him with the elastic band while then wedging the door shut behind him with the carabiner in the door frame of the bathroom so tight it put indentations in it.

He then would have had to leave the hotel room pretending that the main hotel door, that he had a key for, was latched shut, even though it wasn't, calling hotel security to come open it for him, for what reason would he do that? to prove that Chris had locked himself in? NO... because hotel security could very well have agree to come up and open it for him, then they would have known that it was not latched shut and wondered why he had called them in the first place, same with the bedroom door, so it does not make sense that the body guard is lying about the doors being latched shut from the inside. If someone else killed Chris before the body guard got there to check on him, then the doors would not have been latched from the inside.

I don't know who L'Wren Scott is, the others of course.

Cobain, Hendrix, Winehouse, Cornell (University (!)) are all from the families. They were pushed to "fame", as much projects as any other famous person.

It makes much more sense their "deaths" were staged to be able to lead a happy and quiet life outside of the craziness of "showbusiness" (read that word out loud).

Same for Joplin, Monroe, Prince, Lennon, Jackson, Morrison, Marley, Hutchins, Presley, Ledger, the list is endless.

My point is not so much that you believe the "official" stories (suicides), but believe in their deaths at all. These people have acted their whole lives, why would they suddenly stop doing that at their "deaths"?

And those "various sources and angles" are in the end all part of the same business owners.

L'Wren Scott was Mick Jagger's long-term girlfriend and a stylist/fashion designer. She was found hanged in her Manhattan apartment.

All of the evidence (circumstantial and non-circumstantial) for above listed people point to death, not staged escapes, with the exception of Morrison, and possibly Presley (though not likely), not that familiar with Hitchins.

I see this as a much more probable option than a sudden "suicide" without any sign of depression, just 1.5 hours after the last show and without leaving a suicide letter.

The ideal escape from fame. And selling some records too, not unimportant.

Gaia watched this beer commercial one time too many.

So we have come together on this day to prove symbolically that we are more than a collection of individuals striving one against another, that none of us is too proud, none of us too high, none is too rich, and none too poor, to stand together before the face of the Lord and of the world in this indissoluble, sworn community. And this united nation, we have need of it.

A private funeral for Chris Cornell, the 52-year-old rock star who hanged himself following a concert at the Fox Theatre in Detroit Wednesday, May 17, is scheduled for Friday, Rolling Stone reports.

The funeral will be at the Los Angeles Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The magazine reports that Cornell's body was flown from Detroit to Los Angeles on Sunday.

A source close to Cornell's family told CNN a public memorial for fans may be scheduled at a later date.
