Incredibly this rural residence was constructed without the use of a single power tool using only earth, clay and straw.

It is now being rented out - with the tenant paying in milk.

Resourceful Michael Buck erected this 'cob house' at the bottom of his garden in Oxfordshire.

Cob houses are built according to a method thought to date back to prehistoric times, using just nature's building materials.

The former art teacher also saved cash by kitting out his home using only unwanted items donated or rescued from skips.

The 59-year-old smallholder said: "There's this idea people have to spend their whole lives paying off their mortgage doing something they don't enjoy which I wanted to challenge."

Mr Buck, from just outside Oxford, spent two years gathering the materials and constructing the house.
The base of the house was made by mixing a clay-based subsoil with sand, straw, animal dung and water.

Then the father of three collected wide bundles of reeds draped across his back garden and taught himself to thatch in order to create the intricate roof.

The floorboards were rescued from a neighbour's skip and Mr Buck cleverly used the windscreen for an old lorry to create several of the home's windows.

I wuv that house too! :heartflower I want one! :hypo: (Except bigger.... maybe three receptions and four/five bedrooms.... some wishes won't diiiiiiiiie. :emb: ).

What's the recipe for "cob"? anything I can start cooking while I save up for a bit of earth to build my hobbit mansion on?

:D

Are you going to cook a horse? :P

I don't care about lots of bedrooms...2 or 3 will do :P

I would also want nice comfy sofas. Not that thing, in the hobbit house.

I luvs it, I luvs it, I luvs it. :yup: :beat: :heart1:

Did I say I luvs it? :yup:

Not that kind of cob. Nor the kind that has corn on it. Nor the cob that means (somehow) that someone is angry. :D Cob cob, you know - house building cob. If I can start on a few thousand cob bricks now who knows what the next 80 years might bring. :D

I've cut my dream home down from 3,77762,999 bedrooms to 4 or 5. I don't think I can pare the dream down further. :D That would be a pretty measly dream! I accept that I'll be lucky to have one bedroom in my forthcoming dotage - but a girl can dream, eh?

Phe - I'm getting the vibe that you kind of quite like that hobbit house..... Call me psychic (which is, I suppose, better than calling me psychopathic). :D
